Boots are made of different materials: top grain leather, nubuck, split grain leather and nylon mesh. Split grain leather and nylon mesh are the most breathable material, light weight and the least expensive of boot materials. As a trade off, they have the least amount of insulation. Nubuck is the easiest to maintain. Top grain leather is the most water resistant, durable and supportive. Boots have varying degrees of water resistance. They may be water-resistant, waterproof or minimum vapor transmission. A waterproof boot prevents water from entering the boot at all. A water-resistant boot prevents some, but not all, water from entering the boot. If a boot is treated with Gore-Tex, the water cannot enter the boot, but moisture can escape, keeping your foot dry from rain and snow outside the boot and from sweat inside the boot. Some boots allow water and vapor to pass through the boot. These have maximum vapor transmission and are a cooler boot for hot, dry climates.
