Keep your camming devices clean and dry and be sure to inspect spring-loaded camming devices on a regular basis.  If the structural integrity is suspect in any way, retire the piece and clearly mark or destroy it so you will be sure not use it again. What to look for?   Make sure the axle has not bent and that all wire strands are intact.  It is okay for wire strands to be bent, but major kinks mean retirement for that piece. When the teeth on the device are worn unevenly, then it has lost its shape and should be retired.  Keep an eye on slings.  If you see any abrasion or broken stitching, then replace the sling.  As a general rule, soft gear, such as nylon slings, should be automatically retired after a major fall or after five years from the date of purchase because of natural deterioration over time.
