Indoor wall climbing requires some equipment.  If you plan to climb an artificial wall, you will need a harness, belay device, rock climbing shoes, chalk bag, chalk and appropriate climbing clothes.  Many climbing gyms will offer all of this equipment for rent.  If you want your own gear we recommend shoes that are somewhat stiff for moderate routes and climbing shoes with more precision for more difficult climbing.  Generally, climbing gyms have belay devices available for use, but if you want your own, you may want an ATC.  Chalk bags come in many sizes and designs.  A smaller bag keeps the chalk inside it better, whereas, a larger bag is easier to get your hand into when you are climbing.  Some bags come with a waist belt and others merely clip on to your harness.  A bag with a belt will allow you to turn the bag to different side of your body, which gives you more options for accessing it when climbing.  The chalk is basic gym chalk, but is sold in a climber’s chalk packaging for climbers.  Proper climbing attire is made out of stretchy materials and is designed to be out the way of a climber trying to see his or her feet.
